I wanted to start off by promoting some world building tools I’ve discovered on the web. Without these tools, creating a world like Kh’Aos would be much more difficult. These tools are simply amazing, and I appreciate all the hard work that went into creating these tools.
If you know of more world building type tools please add them to the comments below and I’ll add them to this post.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with any of these sites in any way. I mention them only to pass along the info incase someone else might appreciate them as well.
Donjon ( www.donjon.bin.sh )
This site is FULL of many useful tools to give you a kickstart on your world building. There are also dozens of tools to help RPGers to build quests for D&D (versions 3, 4, 5), d20 games, Pathfinder, and others.
I used their Fractal World Generator to create the template for Kh’Aos. When creating a world map, you have a few options you can choose that help customize your world. It should be noted that each world is completely unique. Thats the power of the fractal generator.
Along with the Fractal World Generator, there are many other tools. A small sample includes: Fantasy Name Generator, A calendar generator, medieval demographics calculator, adventure generators, an inn generator, and so much more.
Take a look. It is simply amazing.
City Generator by CrystalBalSoft ( www.citygen.crystalballsoft.com )
This fantasy tool does exactly what it claims. It will generate city demographics based on some inputs you choose. You can choose the population, whether the city is by a river or sea, if the city includes a military force, number of gates – it will also include wards with a list of professions who live or set up shops in each ward.
This will certainly help you get a boost if you are looking to create a city and need guidance.
Mithril and Mages ( www.mithrilandmages.com )
This site has a slew of random name generators. While it isn’t focussed entirely on fantasy – there are name generators for the old west, and many modern era options, it’s still good place to get your naming juices flowing. Any tool that help spark the imagination and get things rolling more quickly is useful.
Check it out.
Pass along other tools you’ve discovered.
I’m sure there are many other useful tools developed out there so please pass along the ones you use and recommend. List them in the comments below and as time permits, I’ll add them to the main section of the post, or perhaps create a custom sidebar for this page as the list expands.
